Knowing your intrinsic value

Hello Beautiful People! It has been a ridiculously long time since I posted seeing as how I have been swamped with starting this practice, being a full time Mom of four amazing (and time consuming children), and okay I have tried to maintain some sanity by taking time for #selfcare and #selflove.

Today I want to talk about something near and dear to all of us and if it isn't hopefully this post will make it a bit closer to your heart: Your Intrinsic Value. First a little English lesson: what is the definiton of intrinsic? Intrinsic means "belonging naturally, essential, inherent, innate" and my favorite belonging wholly within another entity. For this post I will use my favorite definition (I know so selfish lol). There is a difference between self esteem and self worth or value. Self esteem is something the human race has created to measure how we feel about ourselves and usually in comparison to others. It goes up and down. Our self worth or intrinsic value is something we were born with and never changes no matter what we do or say or don't do or don't say, it just is and always will be of great worth. This should be very comforting as most of us were taught from the womb that we will be loved or given attention based on the good things we do or say and if we don't do those things we won't be loved or noticed as much. This is painful to all and sets us up for various issues as we feel we are never "good enough."

So the ultimate question is how do we know, feel, and operate from our intrinsic value? Let's go back to the definition for a moment and a beautifully crafted (wink wink) illustration below. Our value belongs wholly within the greater entitity of self which you can imagine as spirit or body, whichever works for you. In the illustration, the inside circle is who we really are which embodies our intrinsic value. The circles around this are layers put on at conception through epigenetics or throughout our life as we took on the projections of those around us (if you are intersted in projections and epigenetics I will go into that in another post). Ultimately it is these layers that prevent us from operating from our intrinisic value. As we identify the layers, process the trauma associated with them, and reject the lies associated with the layers they begin to diminish and our intrinsic value and who we really are begins to shine through. This can be done in many different ways, self help books and quality therapy being two of them. A word of caution: the healing journey can be quite complex and stressful even if worth it and is safest when done with the support of a qualified mental health practitioner.

In 1957, a buddhist monastery in Thailand was relocated. As a beloved clay Buddha was moved a crack formed in the clay. One of the monks noticed a glimmer through the crack and became curious. Layer by layer the clay was taken off until miraculously the removal revealed a solid gold Buddha beneath. Historians believe that the gold Buddha had been covered in a time of war to protect and preserve it. In much the same way the Ego preserves our instrinsic value from attack through layers such as: anger, judgement, depression, avoidance, and anxiety. It is our responsibility and great mission in life to uncover our true self and intrinsic value. It is in there, you are in there. It isn't easy work and takes consistent effort but it's worth it as you are worth it. Those are your "Thoughts for the Day." Keep trekkin Life Travelers. You got this!
