Danielle Fenn, M.S. , Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Dedicated to Lasting Change
I began my professional career as an Environmental Scientist but found that what I really wanted to do was help people. I applied to the renowned Marriage and Family Therapy Master's program at BYU and was blessed to be accepted. For the next two years I received top notch education and training in many subjects such as diversity, ethics, diagnosing, abuse and other trauma, addictions, therapy modalities, sex therapy, family systems, child therapy and much more.
I believe that one of the reasons that BYU's MFT program has year-after-year created such top-notch therapists is because of the focus on what is called the "self of the therapist." Simply put this means who you are as a therapist and who you are as a person. A requirement of my program was to be aware of and "own my stuff" which reduces the projection of my beliefs and life experiences onto my clients. This is a true gift to all clients as I am able to be a neutral third party and avoid any transference of my thoughts or beliefs onto my client. In this way I am able to guide clients in their journey as they own their insights, goals, and process. This helps them to gain confidence in their ability to heal themselves with the therapist as a support rather than someone they create a dependence on.

After graduation I worked at several different agencies and private practices across the country where I gained valuable experience in the treatment of individuals, families, and couples. The diagnoses and issues I treated included, but were not limited to: OCD, BPD, BD, NPD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, relationship issues, sexual disorders, ADHD, ODD, issues related to gender and sexual identity, and faith crises.

I believe that I am unique as a therapist due to my exposure through personal and professional experiences to many different ethnicities, races, and cultures. I have lived and worked in Utah, Hawaii, Florida, California, and Washington. I have also traveled to several countries where I was immersed in the local culture and language. All of these experiences enabled me to have a greater understanding not only of the diversity of various value systems and family dynamics but also an appreciation of the similarities that the entire human race share. In the decade that I lived in Hawaii I was able to benefit from the amazing Aloha spirit of the Island and it's people but also have the experience of living as a minority. This experience was painful at times but also one of my most valuable as I now have empathy and understanding of other minorities as I truly understand some of the thoughts and emotions involved in that experience and all of it's related mental health issues. I am also blessed to be the mother of four beautiful mixed race children which has afforded me a greater understanding of racial issues and the beauty of a mixed race family.

In addition, as an MFT, I am systems oriented which means that I approach therapy with the larger lens of how the family, couple, or comunity system influences the individual. In this way I am able to help my clients create lasting change as the whole system evolves rather than just the individual.

My approach to therapy is client-led, meaning you hold the reigns to your treatment and the process of therapy. You will create your goals and I will help you achieve them all while in a safe and peaceful setting and at a pace that is comfortable for you. I look forward to helping you make changes that will last a lifetime!
